INDESO is a major project for Indonesia. It demonstrates the determination and commitment of the Indonesian government to support economic growth based on its marine and coastal resources. To achieve this ambitious goal the government has not hesitated to team up with the most capable international agencies.

Mr Sharif C. Sutardjo, the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has worked extensively with France to obtain the most sophisticated space technologies for Indonesia.

The INDESO project has taken 4 years to develop and was funded by the French Development Agency (AFD). It is being sponsored and coordinated by the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), which has committed $31.5M to this future project.

Balitbang KP

Balitbang KPThe project initiator and coordinator, the Balitbang KP is the Agency for Marine and Fisheries Research and Development within the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. It is playing a vital role in the Blue Revolution led by the Indonesian government. The Balitbang KP is the driving force behind this policy to make Indonesia the world’s leading producer of seafood.


CLSThe supplier of the INDESO marine resources forecasting and management center, CLS, a subsidiary of the French Space Agency (CNES - Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) operates more than 80 instruments carried on 40 satellites. An expert in location and data collection by satellite, as well as ocean observation and monitoring, CLS is providing the infrastructure for this project, which includes systems, acquisition facilities (station), scheduling and processing facilities, architecture (building), forecasting models and all the satellite data. CLS is the project prime contractor and coordinator on behalf of the Balitbang KP.


IfremerAn expert in shrimp farming, Ifremer, the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, contributes through its work and expertise to knowledge of the oceans and their resources, monitoring of the marine and coastal environments, and sustainable development of maritime activities. It was commissioned to provide support to the Indonesian shrimp farming industry.


IRDThe French Institute of Research for Development (IRD) is a French research organization. An original and unique player in European research for development, the IRD has been commissioned in the framework of the INDESO project to study and protect the coastline, especially the mangroves and coral reefs. This work will be conducted by its centers in Montpellier (France) and Nouméa (New Caledonia).


CevaThe French Center for Study and Promotion of Algae, is located in Europe’s leading seaweed production region. Europe’s only technical center, its activities are dedicated to the study and development of marine plants. It was commissioned by the Indonesian government to assist its scientists in optimizing the seaweed farming sector in Indonesia.


AFDFor nearly seventy years the French Development Agency (AFD) has been promoting development and fighting poverty in developing countries and in French overseas territories. The INDESO project is costing a total of $31.5 million, of which $30 million is being loaned to the Indonesian government by the AFD.
