Within the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, KKP), the Agency for Marine and Fisheries Research & Development (Badan Penelitian dan Pengembangan Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan – Balitbang KP) is responsible for defining and conducting the research and studies needed to further knowledge of marine resources and improve the Ministry’s ability to manage them. The Balitbang KP, which was founded in 2000, currently employs around 1000 people, including a large number of researchers. It is both initiator and sponsor of the project to establish this center for forecasting and managing marine resources. The aim of the center will be to predict changes in fishery resources, protect them (mainly from illegal fishing) and develop them. To achieve this, the Balitbang KP is not only organizing INDESO around 7 major centers of national importance, but has also assigned over a hundred Indonesian experts to work on these topics.
The Balitbang KP has provided them with a large infrastructure including the latest space technologies for acquiring, processing and analyzing high-resolution satellite data, and modeling and forecasting the state of the ocean and the dynamics of certain marine populations: key resources for our islands.
